Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction, or fat removal as it is more commonly called, is the removal of excess fatty tissue to reshape the body.

It is not designed as a treatment for obesity or weight reduction and people who fall into this category will need advice on diet and exercise before considering surgery.

Fat removal surgery targets specific areas of the body to sculpt and define shape.

Men commonly opt for liposuction to sculpt their stomachs and to remove excess fat around the breasts (Gynaecomastia).

• Liposuction is the fastest growing procedure for men in the UK, in fact 25% of liposuction operations are performed on men.
• We offer liposuction to most areas of the body, commonly the abdomen, flanks ('love handles'), chest and double chin.
• Recovery times are quick and you can resume normal activities after a couple of weeks
• Liposuction is effective, it actually removes the fat cells from the specific area.
• Your BMI will help our Nurse Counsellors assess your suitability.
• This procedure isn't suitable for very overweight patients.

The procedure for liposuction

• The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic, or local anaesthetic with sedation often as a day case.
• The procedure can take between 1-2 hours.
• A very small incision is made to remove extract the fat and this is closed with a stitch or dissolvable suture.

What to expect from liposuction?

• You can start to see results after surgery once the swelling subsides.
• Full results are not seen until around 6 weeks after surgery
• Any scarring is minimal as the incisions are tiny and will fade over time.

Recovery from liposuction (fat removal)

• You will be required to wear a support garment for up to 6 weeks post-operatively.
• There is often some bruising and swelling to the areas treated, however this should subside after 1-2 weeks.
• It is advisable to take approx 1 week off work, depending on the nature of your job.
